Please join us for a fascinating discussion about Harold Cromwell with special guests Michael McCormack and Fabiyino Germain-Bajowa, Assistant Curators at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
Born in the African Nova Scotia community of Weymouth Falls, folk artist Harold Cromwell (1919-2008) was descended from Black Loyalists who settled in the area in 1783. Hospitalized in Debert after serving in WWII, Cromwell began sketching using pencil and ballpoint pen materials given to him by nurses. His work depicts rural life with humour in early 20th century, NS. Cromwell sold his work at Upper Clements Park and the Annapolis Royal Farmers’ and Traders’ market.

We look forward to introducing you to the art of Louis Jeremy, with guest speaker Bryan Rice.
Mi’kmaw carver, Louis Jeremy (1867-1947) was born near Brickton, NS and spent his early years near Tupperville, NS. He was a skilled woodsman and carver and earned a living making bowls, baskets, and other intricately decorated household items. Jeremy’s work is exhibited in the Tupperville Museum and the O’Dell House Museum, Annapolis Royal.

The Folk Art Society of Nova Scotia was created by a group of like-minded folk art lovers, with the desire to share this uniquely Nova Scotian art form with generations to come.
